Doswell \u00a0is an\u00a0unincorporated community\u00a0in\u00a0Hanover County\u00a0in the Central Region of the\u00a0U.S. Commonwealth\u00a0of\u00a0Virginia. Originally called Hanover Junction, it was located on the\u00a0Virginia Central Railroad, which later became part of the\u00a0Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad\u00a0(C&O) at a crossing of the\u00a0Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, a north-south route. Both railroads are now owned by\u00a0CSX Transportation, although the former Virginia Central line is leased to a short-line carrier,\u00a0Buckingham Branch Railroad. The area near the Doswell train station is a popular train-watching site for\u00a0railfans.<\/p>\n
In this tiny hamlet the tracks of two important railroads intersect: The Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac and Virginia Central Railroads. During the famous\u00a0Civil War campaigns of 1862-1864, Robert E. Lee\u2019s army relied on these railroads for supplies. Just to the east was the Doswell farm where the largest horseracing track in central Virginia was located. General stores and other businesses including an antique shop known today as \u201cSquashapenny\u201d sprang up in this community. Located due east is the modern theme park,\u00a0Kings Dominion.<\/p>\n
Due south approximately 7 miles is the Town of Ashland. Other nearby attractions include\u00a0Scotchtown,\u00a0Church Quarter,\u00a0North Anna Battlefield,\u00a0Hanover Courthouse\u00a0and\u00a0Hanover Tavern.<\/p>\n
