It is part of the\u00a0Anchorage, Alaska<\/a>\u00a0Metropolitan Statistical Area<\/a>. At the\u00a02010 census<\/a>\u00a0the population was 234, down from 249 in 2000. The\u00a0terminus<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Matanuska Glacier<\/a>\u00a0is located approximately three miles southwest of Glacier View. Glacier View first appeared on the 2000 U.S. Census as a census-designated place.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the Glacier View community, there’s a tradition on the 4th of July like no other. „What’s special about this area is nobody knows about it, It’s the best kept secret in this entire state.“ The town of a few hundred knows how to draw a crowd for Independence Day. „Pretty much it’s always been word of mouth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Things to do in Glacier View:<\/span><\/p>\n

April \u201cHawk Watch\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This big pullout doesn\u2019t look like much, but each spring bird watchers from around the world gather here to look for elusive species of raptors and falcons. Migrating north for summer, red tail hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, gyre falcons and other birds of prey gather in large numbers here, playing on the uplifts along the windy cliffs. In addition to seeing impressive numbers of hawks and rare species, birders are drawn by the good light, with sunshine reflecting off the snow creating perfect light reflectivity for watching birds. The annual event is sponsored by the\u00a0Mat-Su Birders<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alpine Historical Park<\/span><\/p>\n

Located between the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountain ranges, The Alpine Historical Park provides community members, as well as visitors from far or near, a look back in time to understand the heritage and cultures of the early settlers of this area. The Park is a place for family and community members, often being used for gatherings, parties, business events, community picnics and many other events, as there is no community center in our area. The park is also open to those who simply want to enjoy quiet moments or walks through meandering paths surrounded by lush lawns, flourishing beds of flowers and berries, within the community gardens, all tucked between majestic mountain ranges. Exhibits include; The Sutton Post Office, the Athabascan Culture and Winter lodge, the Old Timers Hall of Fame, History of the Coal Mining Industry and Equipment, and the Construction of the Glenn Highway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caribou Creek Recreational Mining Area<\/span><\/p>\n

Just south of the Caribou Creek bridge near mile marker 104 on the Glenn Highway in the shadow of the Lion\u2019s Head rock formation, look for the turnoff for the Caribou Creek Recreational Mining Area.\u00a0 You are not going to get fabulously rich here and be the next star of the TV reality show Gold Rush, but you do have the opportunity to carry a gold pan and shovel, hike the steep half-mile-long trail down to the creek, and pan for gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

In selecting dirt for prospecting, find a spot where Caribou Creek\u2019s current has slowed, perhaps in the lee of a large boulder or on the inside of a stream meander.\u00a0 If you are persistent in digging the best stream gravels, there is a good chance you will see a fine trailing of color in your gold pan.\u00a0 Perhaps even richer than the placer deposits will be the tranquil beauty you find where Caribou Creek joins the Matanuska River along the cliffs of Lion\u2019s Head.<\/span><\/p>\n
