Florida (nicknamed the Sunshine State and known for its balmy climate and natural beauty) – Spanish for „land of flowers“ (name in tribute to Spain\u2019s Easter celebration known as „Pascua Florida“ or Feast of Flowers) – is a state located in the\u00a0southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the north by\u00a0Alabama\u00a0and\u00a0Georgia, to the east by the\u00a0Atlantic Ocean, and to the south by the\u00a0Straits of Florida\u00a0and\u00a0Cuba. Florida is the\u00a022nd-most extensive, the\u00a03rd-most populous,\u00a0and the\u00a08th-most densely populated\u00a0of the U.S. states.\u00a0Jacksonville\u00a0is the\u00a0most populous municipality\u00a0in the state and is the largest city by area in the\u00a0contiguous United States. The\u00a0Miami metropolitan area\u00a0is Florida’s\u00a0most populous urban area. The city of\u00a0Tallahassee\u00a0is the state capital.<\/span><\/p>\n

A peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the\u00a0Straits of Florida, it has the\u00a0longest coastline\u00a0in the\u00a0contiguous United States, approximately 1,350 miles (2,170\u00a0km), and is the only state that borders both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Juan Ponce de Leon discovers Florida in 1513, possibly near present-day St. Augustine, to claim Florida for Spain. This is when written records about life in Florida began. First permanent European settlement is established in 1565 in St. Augustine by Spain. During the first half of the 1800s, U.S. troops waged war with the region\u2019s Native American population. Florida becomes a U.S. Territory in 1821.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beginning in the late 19th century, residents of Northern states flocked to Florida to escape harsh winters. In the 20th century, tourism became Florida\u2019s leading industry and remains so today, attracting millions of visitors annually. Florida is also known for its oranges and grapefruit, and some 80 percent of America\u2019s citrus is grown there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Home to many\u00a0state parks, amusement parks, beautiful beaches, and numerous other attractions like Walt Disney World in Orlando,\u00a0The Everglades National Park, \u00a0The Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Station, Sea World Orlando, Busch Gardens,\u00a0Dry Tortugas National Park,\u00a0The Salvador Dali Museum…The Sunshine State offers a plethora of\u00a0options\u00a0regardless of the type of traveler you are.
