Virginia is a state in the\u00a0Southeastern United States located between the\u00a0Atlantic Coast and the\u00a0Appalachian Mountains.\u00a0Virginia is nicknamed the „Old Dominion“ due to its status as the first English colonial possession established in mainland North America, and „Mother of Presidents“ because\u00a0eight U.S. presidents\u00a0were born there, more than any other state.\u00a0The geography and climate of the\u00a0Commonwealth\u00a0are shaped by the\u00a0Blue Ridge Mountains\u00a0and the\u00a0Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is\u00a0Richmond;\u00a0Virginia Beach\u00a0is the most populous city, and\u00a0Fairfax County\u00a0is the most populous political subdivision.<\/p>\n

The area’s history begins with\u00a0several indigenous groups, including the\u00a0Powhatan. In 1607 the\u00a0London Company\u00a0established the\u00a0Colony of Virginia\u00a0as the first permanent\u00a0New World\u00a0English\u00a0colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony’s early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the\u00a013 Colonies\u00a0in the\u00a0American Revolution\u00a0and joined the\u00a0Confederacy\u00a0in the\u00a0American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia’s northwestern counties\u00a0seceded\u00a0to form the state of\u00a0West Virginia.<\/p>\n

he\u00a0Chesapeake Bay\u00a0separates the contiguous portion of the Commonwealth from the two-county peninsula of Virginia’s\u00a0Eastern Shore. The bay was formed from the drowned river valleys of the\u00a0Susquehanna River\u00a0and the\u00a0James River.\u00a0Many of\u00a0Virginia’s rivers\u00a0flow into the Chesapeake Bay, including the\u00a0Potomac,\u00a0Rappahannock,\u00a0York, and James, which create three peninsulas in the bay.<\/p>\n

The climate of Virginia is\u00a0temperate\u00a0and becomes increasingly warmer and more humid farther south and east.\u00a0The Atlantic Ocean has a strong effect on eastern and southeastern coastal areas of the state.\u00a0\u00a0In spite of its position adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, even the coastal areas have a significant continental influence with quite large temperature differences between summer and winter, particularly given the state climate’s subtropical classification, which is typical of states in the\u00a0Upper South.<\/p>\n

Virginia has the highest concentration of technology workers of any state,\u00a0and the fourth-highest number of technology workers after\u00a0California,\u00a0Texas, and\u00a0New York.\u00a0<\/span>Computer chips\u00a0became the state’s highest-grossing export in 2006, surpassing its traditional top exports of coal and tobacco combined,\u00a0reaching a total export value of $717 million in 2015.\u00a0<\/span>Northern Virginia, once considered the state’s dairy capital, now hosts software, communication technology, defense contracting companies, particularly in the\u00a0Dulles Technology Corridor.<\/p>\n
