The population was 23.793 at the 2010 census. The town is made up of three major villages: South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth and Yarmouth Port. It is a popular summer tourist destination. Yarmouth is comprised of the villages of Yarmouth Port, Bass River, Great Island, South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouth. Centrally located on the Mid Cape, Yarmouth's many lodgings, restaurants and kid-friendly attractions make it a popular destination for families. One of the oldest towns on Cape Cod, Yarmouth (pop. 23,793) was established in 1639. There are indications that Leif Ericson navigated Bass River over 1,000 years ago. A true sea captain's town, Route 6A in Yarmouth Port is dotted with historic homes, many of which are now inns and restaurants. At one time, more than 50 sea captains called Yarmouth home, hence the one-mile stretch along Route 6A called "Captains' Mile." Similar to Dennis, Yarmouth encompasses both the north and the south side of the Cape, and each section has its own flavor. In Yarmouth Port you will find historic homes—many of which once belonged to sea captains—antique shops, fine restaurants and historic spots. Route 28, along the south side, is full of shopping, family fun and entertainment including several miniature golf courses, Cape Cod Inflatable Park, and many family-style seafood restaurants. South Yarmouth also has its share of nightlife.
</oembed>
