Later in the 18th and 19th centuries, scientists and businessmen began harnessing the power of the\u00a0Niagara River\u00a0for electricity and the city began to attract manufacturers and other businesses drawn by the promise of inexpensive hydroelectric power. After the 1960s, however, the city and region witnessed an economic decline, following an attempt at urban renewal under then Mayor Lackey. Consistent with the rest of the\u00a0Rust Belt\u00a0as industries left the city, old line affluent families relocated to nearby suburbs and out of town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite the decline in heavy industry,\u00a0Niagara Falls State Park\u00a0and the downtown area closest to the falls continue to thrive as a result of tourism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Niagara Falls&#8217; main industry is tourism. Almost ten million people visit the city and falls each year, and the waterfall is considered one of the United States&#8217; top ten tourist destinations.\u00a0However, the city struggles to compete with\u00a0Niagara Falls, Ontario, which has a much more vibrant tourism industry and stronger economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The city is home to the\u00a0Niagara Falls State Park. The park has several attractions, including\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Cave of the Winds (New York)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cave_of_the_Winds_(New_York)\">Cave of the Winds<\/a>\u00a0behind the\u00a0Bridal Veil Falls,\u00a0Maid of the Mist, a popular boat tour which operates at the foot of the\u00a0Rainbow Bridge, Prospect Point and its\u00a0observation tower, Niagara Discovery Center, and the\u00a0Aquarium of Niagara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Several other attractions also near the river, including\u00a0Whirlpool State Park,\u00a0De Veaux Woods State Park,\u00a0Earl W. Brydges Artpark State Park\u00a0in nearby\u00a0Lewiston, New York, and\u00a0Fort Niagara State Park\u00a0in\u00a0Youngstown, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Attractions in the downtown include the\u00a0Seneca Niagara Casino &amp; Hotel.
