Amenia is one of the original towns formed by act of March 7, 1788. It comprises the width of the Oblong Tract, and the east tier of lots in the Great Nine Partners Patent. The first known inhabitants of the area were members of the Pequot people, who had a village in the northeast part of the town on the west side of Indian Pond called Wechquadnach<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Amenia is located in north east Dutchess County, New York (less than 2 hours from NY City) and between Amenia, Wassaic, South Amenia, Leedsville, Smithfield Valley, Amenia Union and South Amenia. The name is derived from the Latin word, amoena, which means „pleasant to the eye“ and you’ll find that’s true especially in our many vistas, views and parklands.<\/p>\n

The planning board is also discussing a proposed addition to Amenia’s existing golf course, Silo Ridge, with a health spa, two hotels and 328 town houses.<\/p>\n

The town center is a single block, deserted after dark, with a couple of antiques stores, a Sears, a synagogue, a law office, a post office and perpetual plans by the town to spruce things up.<\/p>\n

Amenia is a two-hour train ride from Grand Central during rush hours, with frequent trains during the peak times. The 90-mile drive to New York City can likewise be done in two hours. For hardy souls, that puts Amenia in commuting distance of Manhattan.<\/p>\n
