However, it is not exempt from problems that typically plague cities that experience tremendous growth, such as overcrowded roads and highways, crime, sprawl, and government budget issues. Many of the problems are indirectly or directly caused by the city&#8217;s difficulty in coping with the large population growth experienced in the last twenty years, and the annexation of the\u00a0Banning Lewis Ranch\u00a0area to accommodate further population growth of 175,000 future residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Almost immediately following the arrival of railroads beginning in 1871, the city&#8217;s location at the base of\u00a0Pikes Peak\u00a0and the\u00a0Rocky Mountains\u00a0made it a popular tourism destination. Tourism is the third largest employer in the Pikes Peak region, accounting for more than 16,000 jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colorado Springs has more than 55 attractions and activities in the area,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Visitcos_72-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0including\u00a0Garden of the Gods,\u00a0United States Air Force Academy, the\u00a0ANA\u00a0Money Museum,\u00a0Cheyenne Mountain Zoo,\u00a0Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center,\u00a0Old Colorado City\u00a0and the\u00a0U.S. Olympic Training Center.<sup id=\"cite_ref-73\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The downtown Colorado Springs Visitor Information Center offers free area information to leisure and business\u00a0travelers.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-Visitcos_72-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The\u00a0Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region\u00a0(COPPeR), also located downtown, supports and advocates for the arts throughout the Pikes Peak Region.
