It is also known as one of the best beaches on the\u00a0Middle Atlantic\u00a0coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cape May began hosting vacationers from Philadelphia in the mid 18th century and is recognized as the country&#8217;s oldest seaside resort.\u00a0Following the construction of\u00a0Congress Hall\u00a0in 1816, Cape May became increasingly popular in the 18th century and was considered one of the finest resorts in America by the 19th century.\u00a0In 1878, a five-day-long fire destroyed 30 blocks of the town center and, as part of the reconstruction efforts, replacement homes were almost uniformly of Victorian style.\u00a0As a result of this and of more recent preservation efforts, Cape May is noted for its large number of well-maintained\u00a0Victorian\u00a0houses \u2014 the second largest collection of such homes in the nation after San Francisco. In 1976, the entire city of Cape May was officially designated a\u00a0National Historic Landmark\u00a0as the\u00a0Cape May Historic District, making Cape May the only city in the United States wholly designated as such.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-30\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>That designation is intended to ensure the architectural preservation of these buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cape May is generally low-lying; its highest point, at the intersection of\u00a0Washington\u00a0and Jackson Streets, is 14 feet (4.3\u00a0m) above sea level.\u00a0Cape May borders\u00a0West Cape May Borough,\u00a0Lower Township, the Atlantic Ocean and\u00a0Delaware Bay.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-34\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The\u00a0Cape May\u2013Lewes Ferry\u00a0provides transportation across the Delaware Bay between\u00a0North Cape May, New Jersey\u00a0and\u00a0Lewes, Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cape May has become known both for its\u00a0Victorian\u00a0gingerbread homes and its cultural offerings. The town hosts the Cape May Jazz Festival,<sup id=\"cite_ref-57\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0the Cape May Music Festival<sup id=\"cite_ref-58\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and the Cape May, New Jersey Film Festival.\u00a0Cape May is the home of the so-called &#8222;Cape May diamonds&#8220;. They show up at Sunset Beach and other beaches in the area. These are in fact clear\u00a0quartz\u00a0pebbles that wash down from the\u00a0Delaware River. They begin as prismatic quartz (including the color sub-varieties such as smoky quartz and amethyst) in the quartz veins alongside the Delaware River that get eroded out of the host rock and wash down 200 miles to the shore.
