Colchester\u00a0is the\u00a0second most populous<\/a>\u00a0town in\u00a0Chittenden County, Vermont<\/a>, United States. The population was 17,067 as of the\u00a02010 census<\/a>.\u00a0It is the fourth-most populous municipality and\u00a0second-most populous town<\/a>\u00a0in the state of\u00a0Vermont<\/a>. The town is directly to Burlington’s north on the eastern shore of\u00a0Lake Champlain<\/a>\u00a0to the west of the\u00a0Green Mountains<\/a>. The\u00a0Vermont National Guard<\/a>\u00a0is based in the town, and it is also home to the campus of\u00a0Saint Michael’s College<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Colchester is located on the shore of Malletts Bay, part of Lake Champlain. The westernmost part of the town touches the\u00a0New York<\/a> state border in the middle of the lake. To the northwest across the eastern arm of the lake lies the town of\u00a0South Hero<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Grand Isle County, Vermont<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About 2,000 years ago, during the\u00a0Early Woodland period<\/a>, pre-Columbian natives lived in the area. Chartered June 7, 1763,\u00a0the town was named for the Earl of Colchester.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winooski Falls separated from the town of Colchester in 1922, causing Colchester to lose a large percentage of its population to the newly founded city of\u00a0Winooski<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

There has been an annual „Lake Champlain International Father’s Day Fishing Derby“ (LCI) since 1981. In 2009, 6,000 fishermen entered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lakeshore areas of Colchester get an influx of vacationers every summer from southern New England and the\u00a0New York City<\/a>\u00a0area. Traffic, especially around the Fourth of July holiday, increases by a substantial margin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Niquette Bay State Park<\/a>\u00a0offers hiking and swimming in Lake Champlain.<\/span><\/p>\n
