Federalni okrug Va\u0161ington (\u010desto nazivan Va\u0161ington D.C.) je postao prestonica SAD 1791. godine.<\/p>\n

Va\u0161ington nije grad niti dr\u017eava, niti je deo bilo koje dr\u017eave, ve\u0107 je federalni okrug, napravljen s namerom da bude sedi\u0161te vlade.<\/p>\n

Pored toga \u0161to je sedi\u0161te vlade, Va\u0161ington predstavlja i va\u017enu turisti\u010dku destinaciju.<\/p>\n

On se nalazi u srednje atlantskom regionu, ju\u017eno od Merilenda i severno od Vird\u017einije. On je od Vird\u017einije odvojen rekom Potomak.<\/p>\n

U ovoj oblasti su do 17. veka \u017eiveli Indijanci, poznati kao Konoj, koji su se preselili u Merilend sa dolaskom Evropljana.<\/p>\n

Stvaranje prestonice na reci Potomak je odobreno Aktom o stanovanju iz 1790. godine, pri \u010demu su dr\u017eave Merilend i Vird\u017einija donirale deo svoje teritorije radi formiranja ovog federalnog okruga.<\/p>\n

Va\u0161ington obuhvata povr\u0161inu od 176 kvadratnih kilometara i podeljen je u \u010detiri kvadranta \u2013 severozapad, jugozapad, severoistok i jugoistok.<\/p>\n

Va\u0161ington je dobio ime po prvom predsedniku SAD, D\u017eord\u017eu Va\u0161ingtonu, dok D.C. ozna\u010dava \u201eDistrict of Columbia\u201c (Kolumbijski okrug, dobio ime po Kristoferu Kolumbu).<\/p>\n

U Va\u0161ingtonu imaju sedi\u0161te brojne velike korporacije poput Exxon Mobil<\/em>-a i MMF-a.<\/p>\n

Va\u0161ington je bukvalno isprojektovan s namerom da postane prestonica SAD, a isprojektovao ga je arhitekta ro\u0111en u Francuskoj po imenu Pjer \u0160arl Lenfan.<\/p>\n

Va\u0161ington je bogat razli\u010ditim oblicima arhitekture, a me\u0111u najva\u017enijim spomenicima su Bela ku\u0107a, Nacionalna katedrala Va\u0161ingtona, Memorijal Tomasu D\u017eefersonu, Kapitol, Memorijal Linkolnu, \u00a0Memorijal vijetnamskim veteranima i Va\u0161ingtonov spomenik. Uo\u010davaju se razli\u010diti arhitektonski stilovi od neoklasi\u010dnog, preko gotskog i modernog.<\/p>\n

Pored spomenika, Va\u0161ington je poznat i po muzejima. Tamo se nalaze ustanova Smitsonijan, Nacionalni muzej istorije prirode, Nacionalni muzej svemira i vazduhoplovstva, Nacionalni muzej umetnosti i industrije i mnogi drugi. Ina\u010de, ulaz u ustanovu Smitsonijan i 19 muzeja koji se u njoj nalaze je potpuno besplatan, \u0161to va\u017ei i za Nacionalni zoolo\u0161ki vrt.<\/p>\n

Va\u0161ington predstavlja glavni centar ameri\u010dkih medija, a u njemu se nalaze sedi\u0161ta najpoznatijih novinskih agencija poput Washington Post<\/em>-a, Washington Times<\/em>-a, National Geographic<\/em>-a i mnogih drugih.<\/p>\n
