Vermont is a\u00a0state\u00a0in the\u00a0New England\u00a0region of the northeastern\u00a0United States. Vermont is the\u00a02nd-least populous\u00a0of the U.S. states, with fewer than 50,000 more residents than\u00a0Wyoming. The capital is\u00a0Montpelier, the\u00a0least populous state capital\u00a0in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

For thousands of years inhabited by\u00a0indigenous peoples, including the\u00a0Algonquian-speaking\u00a0Abenaki\u00a0and\u00a0Mohawk, much of the territory that is now Vermont was claimed by\u00a0France’s colony of\u00a0New France. France ceded the territory to\u00a0Great Britain\u00a0after being defeated in 1763 in the\u00a0Seven Years’ War. For many years, the nearby\u00a0colonies, especially the provinces of\u00a0New Hampshire\u00a0and\u00a0New York, disputed control of the area (then called the\u00a0New Hampshire Grants). Settlers who held land titles granted by New York were opposed by the\u00a0Green Mountain Boys\u00a0militia, which supported the many settlers whose claims were based on grants from New Hampshire.<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual mean temperature for the state is 43\u00a0\u00b0F (6\u00a0\u00b0C). Vermont has a\u00a0humid continental climate, with\u00a0muddy\u00a0springs, in general a mild early summer, hot Augusts, \u00a0it has colorful autumns: Vermont’s hills reveal red, orange, and (on\u00a0sugar maples) gold foliage as cold weather approaches. Winters are colder at higher elevations.<\/span><\/p>\n
