INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - Professional practice in America

The internship program (professional practice program in America) is intended for final year students or newly graduated students (up to one year after graduation). Participants have the opportunity to work in American companies, in paid internship positions and have the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study. Attendees will be able to improve their language skills by interacting with co-workers, company clients or other interns. After the program, participants have an additional 30 days of the so-called "grace period". During this period students cannot work so it is the best time to explore other parts of the United States of America. The duration of the program is up to 12 months.

TRAINING PROGRAM – Professional training in America

Qualified participants can work for up to 18 months anywhere in the United States, at approved companies that conduct the Training program. This program and the accompanying visa (J1 visa) is NOT a long-term job and allows participants to gain practical experience and guidance in areas relevant to either their program of study or current field of employment.

STEP 1 – Online application

Registration for the program is done directly from the American Adventure website. You can find the link here. In order for your application to be registered as an Internship/Trainee in the "Student Information" section, under "Current Year of Study", select Intern/Trainee.
After receiving the application, you will be contacted by an American Adventure representative who will be in charge of managing your application until the moment of receiving the visa. The application package with documentation, contract and brochure will be sent to you by email.

STEP 2 – Documentation

The applicant applies for the desired program and submits the following documentation:

    • Certificate from the court that he is not under criminal proceedings (Serbian and English),
    • Certificate from the faculty on acquired knowledge or certificate on student status (Serbian and English),
    • motivation letter,
    • A copy of the first page of the passport and all US visas,
    • Copy of SSN (if the student was in the US),
    • A recommendation from a professor at the faculty, all the certificates that would complete your resume,
    • Recommendation from the employer (if the candidate was employed).

If you have any doubts or questions about how to write a good CV or motivation letter, representatives of American Adventure will be at your disposal. You will be informed in a short time whether your special requests can be fulfilled and whether you should provide additional information.

STEP 3 – Screening and job interview

Representatives of sponsoring agencies will schedule a Skype interview for you and check your knowledge of the English language. Based on this interview, the sponsoring agency will create an image of you and form a plan for your presentation to potential employers. Likewise, in case of any doubts, an agent of the sponsoring agency will be at your disposal. This will be followed by discussions with employers and the process of finding employment.

STEP 4 – Job search

When the sponsoring agency finds a potential employer, you will be invited to an interview with them. It usually takes about 3 rounds of interviews to pass until the final answer is reached whether you are accepted for a certain position or not. It often happens that several interviews are held in parallel. Some employers also require the creation of a video CV document, with the help of our representatives.

STEP 5 – Preparation of visa documentation

After a positive response from the employer, the sponsoring company creates your internship-training plan. From this point on, things move pretty quickly and you're soon ready for your visa. After the visa, all we have to do is find you a suitable plane ticket and you are ready.

In order to be considered for a J-1 visa, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

He is nearing the end of his studies or graduated less than a year ago (Internship program - Professional practice in America),

Possesses a diploma of completed studies and at least one year of paid work experience in a profession outside the US or 5 years of paid work experience acquired outside the US and a high school diploma (Training program - Professional training in America),

A certain level of knowledge of the English language (which depends on the requirements of employers).

Participant must be between 22-36 years old.

Can I participate in a professional development program in the USA even though I participated in another J-1 program in the past?

If you were on the Work and Travel program, Au Pair Program or Academic Year Program, you have the right to apply for the Internship or Training program. If you were a participant in the Internship/Training program, you need to take a break of more than 2 years before reapplying to the program.

Are there visa restrictions related to the length of stay in the USA?

The duration of these programs varies from 6 - 18 months and these programs can start at any time during the year ie. there is no specific time to apply for the Intership and Training program. The participant of this program is issued a J-1 visa, which does not allow international participants to change their chosen employer, nor to extend their training beyond 18 months. You will be issued a J-1 visa by the exact date shown on your DS 2019 form (your legal length of training). Also upon entering the US you will be required to fill out an I-94 form which shows the last day you can be in the US on a J-1 visa. In relation to the dates shown on the DS 2019 form, you have plus 30 days of the tourist period that is intended for travel.

Can I extend my internship program?

The Intership/Training Program is suspended on the date shown on the DS 2019 form. Once the DS 2019 is issued and you enter the US you cannot extend the program beyond the date shown on the DS 2019 form.

Can I continue my professional development program during the 30 days of the tourist period?

NO. Once the date with DS 2019 has expired, you are no longer sponsored for the professional development program and cannot continue with the program. You have the option to either return home or stay in the US for an additional 30 days beyond your DS date, but those days are for travel only. If you want to stay in the US for more than 30 days in order to travel and are approved by the program, you must contact an Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) office and request to change your visa to a B-2 tourist visa. You will need to complete INS Form I-539 and pay $75. INS recommends that you submit your tourist visa application 45 days before your J-1 visa expires.

In cooperation with our sponsors, we are able to offer you offers for J1 Internship. We offer programs from various fields such as hotel management, gastronomy, IT sector, marketing, accounting, agriculture, graphic design and many others.
